Guidelines for Fitting a Big Horn Saddle. Saddle fitting is an art form, not a science. No one measurement, such as gullet width, can tell you the whole story. With all the different breeds, heights, withers, conformation, and riding styles on the market these days, it is important to understand that trees are build on Average measurements taken from many different horses. We prefer to use a method that includes the Fitting Wire measurement, the riding preference, breed of animal, and conformation. We pride ourselves on the variety of trees in our product line, and go to great lengths to have a saddle to fit most any horse an rider. We start by making what is called a Fitting Wire out of a 16.5 piece of wire (a coat hanger is one source) and folding it in half or marking the center with a piece of tape with a tab on it so you can hold it. Then we find the center of the horses wither, usually about 2 inches before the mane ends, and form the Fitting Wire over the wither and down the shoulders. We place that center piece with the tape tap right over the horses wither bone and start shaping the wire down both sides of the horses shoulders. When you are done the wire should not press into the horses skin, nor shoulder there be daylight between the horse and the wire. Once you have this complete take a measurement straight across the bottom open end from end to end to get your measurement and determine where your horse falls in the Tree Fit guide below. With the wither template made, measure straight across the bottom connecting the two ends of the wire. Compare this measurement to the Big Horn Tree Fit Chart below. 10 ½ – 11 ¼.
